The Leelanau... refers to Leelanau County,
the LITTLE FINGER of the mitten which is often used
by Michiganders to locate one of the most beautiful
and unique landscapes in America. Shaped by mile-
thick Ice Age glaciers 12,000 years ago, the land is
dotted by 33 lakes, 57 miles of streams and 93 miles of
Lake Michigan shore line. The interplay of light,
water, forests, hills and massive sand dunes creates
memorable vistas in every season. In the late 1800's,
Empire and Glen Haven were major suppliers of timber
rebuilding Chicago after the great fire. Virgin forests
of the Manitou Islands fired steamship boilers as they
plied their trade on the Great Lakes. An agricultural
rural culture still enriches The County.
REUNIONS - Six couples from our USAF Academy Class of
1963 have 'mini-reunions' at Birch Shores. Fightin' 4th rules!
May brings thousands of acres of cherry blooms. July,
the National Cherry Festival. In Autumn, the Crystal
River is thick with King and Coho Salmon migrating to
spawn through the chain of lakes. January's winter
sports are snowmobiling, ice-skating, sledding the
Dunes, nearby downhill & Park cross-country ski trails.
